陰翳礼讃 -IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS-

"The quality that we call beauty, however, must always grow from the realities of life, and our ancestors, forced to live in dark rooms, presently came to discover beauty shadows ultimately to guide shadows towards beauty's end."
This is a quotation from the "In Praise of Shadows", is an essay by novelist Junichiro Tanizaki.

「美というものは常に生活の実際から発達するもので、暗い部屋に住むことを餘儀なくされたわれわれの先祖は、いつしか陰翳のうちに美を発見し、やがては美の目的に添うように陰翳を利用するに至った。」
これは小説家、谷崎潤一郎が著した「陰翳礼讃」という随筆からの引用です。

The light and shade are made much by the Japanese buildings.

 In Japan, has made much of the balance between the light and the shadow from ancient time.  
The shadow is also the one of factors constitutes Wabi-Sabi, represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience.
It was natural that had a infuluence on the field of architecture, fittings, crafts, food, cosmetics, and all of our culture. 

日本では太古から光と影の調和が重んじられてきました。そして陰翳は日本の総括的な世界観や儚さなどの美意識を代表する侘寂（わびさび）の心を構成する要素でもあります。それらは当然、建築、家具、工芸、料理、化粧などあらゆる文化に影響を与えてきました。

Wabi-Sabi is the one of Japanese values.

However, nowaday, it is being losed by the brilliance of modern electric lighting. 
I think it is safe to say that most of people have already forgotten a mind for the shadows. But, we have met a unprecedented big disaster this year, now forced us to have the large-scale conservation of electricity as national level. ironically, it gives us a oppotunity be able to sense the world is brought by the shadows again.  
It may be not until men lose something that realize its value.

しかしながら、現在、それは近代の採光や照明の設備がもたらした「明るさ」のおかげで失われつつあります。大多数の人たちが陰翳への観念を忘れてしまったと言っても過言ではないでしょう。しかしこの国は今年かつてない大災害に遭遇し、現在、我々は国単位の大規模な節電を余儀なくされています。皮肉なことに，それが我々に陰翳がもたらす世界を再び実感できる機会を与えてくれているのです。ひとは何かを失ってはじめてその価値に気付くのかもしれません。
